The New York Mets are poised for improvement after a disappointing season, where they finished with 75 wins and landed fourth in the NL East. However, there are reasons for optimism as they head into 2024. They retain a strong group of hitters, spearheaded by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor, and are welcoming back star closer Edwin Diaz, who missed the entirety of the previous season. Despite these positives, the Mets seem inclined to further strengthen their roster. Speculation surrounds potential acquisitions like J.D. Davis and J.D. Martinez, although Mets executive David Stearns has refrained from commenting on these rumors. The team appears confident in their prospects Brett Baty and Mark Vientos to handle third base and designated hitter duties, both of whom were highly regarded in the Mets’ system. While giving them a chance to prove themselves over a full season makes sense, supplementing with veteran talent could also be beneficial. Martinez, in particular, showcased his prowess as one of the NL’s top hitters last season, boasting impressive statistics despite not having a defensive position. Given their shaky starting pitching rotation, highlighted by the loss of Kodai Senga, the Mets will likely rely heavily on their offense to win games. However, this setback shouldn’t derail their season entirely. With Opening Day approaching, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Mets make additional moves to bolster their roster.
