Wheaton (Ill.) South Elgin tight end Gavin Mueller might be one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. Notre Dame fans got their first look at Mueller last offseason when he showcased his athleticism at a camp in South Bend—before ever playing a snap of high school football.
At the time, the Irish coaching staff was intrigued but cautious, waiting to see how Mueller would perform on the field. With a basketball background, his raw athletic ability was evident, but his junior season provided the key proof of his football potential.
In February, Mueller finally received the Notre Dame offer he had been hoping for, joining a competitive list of suitors that includes Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Colorado, NC State, Wisconsin, and Purdue. As he eyes a June commitment, his upcoming school visits—including another trip to South Bend on April 9—will be crucial in shaping his decision. If the Irish coaching staff makes a strong push, they could be in the driver’s seat.
Despite just one season of high school football under his belt, Mueller has amassed an impressive offer list featuring LSU, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Minnesota, and more. Currently rated as a three-star prospect, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end is ranked No. 30 at his position and No. 10 in Illinois. With his athletic upside, it’s only a matter of time before his rankings—and recruitment—soar.
