Travis Kelce’s production noticeably declined during the 2024 NFL season and Super Bowl LIX, where the Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles, ending their hopes of a historic three-peat.

Kelce recorded career lows in receiving yards (823) and touchdowns (3) during the season, and his last two playoff performances raised concerns about whether the 35-year-old is still at his peak. Against the Eagles, he was held to just four catches for 39 yards as Philadelphia’s defense effectively shut him down.

With his struggles in the biggest game of the year, questions have emerged about Kelce’s ability to remain an elite weapon. However, as the Chiefs await his decision on retirement, they also face a looming financial decision.

The $11.5M Question

Despite his dip in production, Kelce is still in line to receive a significant payday. If he remains on the roster beyond March 14, the Chiefs owe him an $11.5 million bonus. However, if Kansas City releases him before that deadline, they avoid the bonus payout and free up $17.25 million in cap space—flexibility that could help them reshape their roster for another title run.

Kelce has yet to reveal his plans, but his brother, Jason, hinted that a decision may already be made. Speaking on The Steam Room podcast, Jason said, “I think he probably, in his heart, already knows what he wants to do.”

As the Chiefs weigh their options, all eyes remain on Kelce’s next move—will he return for another season, or will Kansas City make a bold financial decision?
