Former Gophers DB Kim Royston Named Head Coach at Cretin-Derham Hall
Kim Royston, a former Minnesota Gophers defensive back, has been appointed the next head football coach at Cretin-Derham Hall High School, the school announced Friday. Royston, who has been involved with the program since 2022, will take over for Steve Walsh.
A 2006 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall, Royston was a standout defensive back who helped lead his team to the Minnesota Class 5A state title game. He started his college career at Wisconsin before transferring to Minnesota, where he had a standout 2011 season with 124 tackles, a sack, and an interception, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention.
Royston has been working in education since his playing days and has served as Cretin-Derham Hall’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion since April 2022. Initially, Lakeville South’s Ben Burk was reported to take the position, but the school ultimately turned to Royston.
He now steps in to lead a storied program with a rich football tradition.
