Longtime Nebraska football play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe has passed away at 61 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his family and the university announced Saturday.

Sharpe first revealed his diagnosis in April 2024, bravely facing the illness for 10 months.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share Greg’s passing on Friday,” his family stated. “He was a beloved husband, father, brother, friend, and broadcaster. His passion for calling Husker football and baseball games brought joy to so many over the past 17 seasons. We take comfort in knowing his legacy will live on through the moments he narrated and the relationships he built.”

The Sharpe family also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Husker fans, acknowledging the letters, gifts, and prayers that uplifted them during his fight.

Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen added, “On behalf of Nebraska Athletics, we send our deepest condolences to Greg’s family. He was an incredible person and a friend to all. Greg embodied what it meant to be a Husker, and he always will be.”

Recently honored as the 2024 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year, Sharpe had been the voice of Husker football since 2007 and led Nebraska’s baseball broadcasts since 2008.

He is survived by his wife, Amy, and daughters, Emily, Campbell, and Taylor.
