Auburn Names Chad Lunsford as Special Teams Coordinator, Welcomes Back Football Legend

The Auburn Tigers have officially hired Chad Lunsford as their new special teams coordinator, bringing a familiar face back to the program.

Lunsford, who previously served at Auburn from 2009 to 2013 as director of player personnel and scouting, is known for his successful track record in coaching special teams. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze expressed enthusiasm about the hire: “Chad has not only excelled as a special teams coach but also as a college head coach. His experience and knowledge will elevate our special teams unit. We’re excited to welcome Chad and his family back to Auburn.”

Before returning to Auburn, Lunsford was the associate head coach at Florida Atlantic, where he also served as the special teams coordinator and coached tight ends. His impact at FAU was significant, with kicker Morgan Suarez and punter Riley Thompson among the nation’s best. Under his guidance, FAU’s special teams units soared, ranking highly in various categories, including punt return and kickoff defense.

Lunsford’s coaching career also includes a long tenure at Georgia Southern, where he served as head coach from 2018 to 2021.

Lunsford expressed his excitement about returning to Auburn, saying, “My family and I are thrilled to be coming back to Auburn. We are grateful for the opportunity and ready to contribute to the Auburn family. Auburn is a special place, and we can’t wait to get to work.”

Lunsford takes over the role from Tanner Burns, who has moved on to Texas State as associate head coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive assistant.
