According to insider Rob Bradford, the Red Sox reportedly haven’t insured Lucas Giolito’s contract, meaning they won’t receive financial relief for his $18 million salary if he’s sidelined. While Giolito has had a mostly healthy MLB career, the decision not to insure his contract seems puzzling, particularly given its substantial value. This oversight reflects poorly on Craig Breslow’s tenure as Boston’s Chief Baseball Officer. If Giolito’s injury is serious, it could result in him missing the entire 2024 season and part of 2025. With few experienced starters, the Red Sox may need to bolster their pitching staff to contend for the playoffs, especially considering bookmakers favor them to miss the postseason in 2024.
