No matter how frequently Pete Alonso is questioned, he consistently expresses his affection for the Mets. Upon arriving at camp in February, the power hitter disclosed to the press his willingness to discuss a long-term contract with the Mets, though those discussions have yet to occur and are unlikely until the next offseason.
Alonso clarified last month that the only contract talks thus far have concerned his one-year contract for the current season. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns indicated earlier that Alonso will likely become a free agent next year, although a return is not ruled out.
Securing Alonso’s commitment beyond 2023 will require a significant financial investment, with Tim Britton suggesting a potential seven-year, $190 million deal. This would position Alonso as the highest-paid first baseman in the league, surpassing Freddie Freeman’s recent contract with the Dodgers.
The potential signing of Alonso to a lucrative deal doesn’t necessarily impede the Mets’ ability to pursue Juan Soto from the Yankees, who is also set to enter free agency next year. Despite the substantial financial implications, owner Steve Cohen’s considerable wealth mitigates concerns about payroll constraints.
Alonso’s on-field performance remains noteworthy, with a batting average of .217 and an OPS of .821 in 2023, including 46 home runs and 118 RBI. He has consistently demonstrated power hitting, leading the MLB in home runs since his debut in 2019.
