The New England Patriots might undergo significant coaching changes this offseason, with speculation about a possible reunion with two familiar faces. Longtime reporter Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal has suggested that Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels could both have an interest in returning to the Patriots organization if the opportunity arises.
Jerod Mayo, currently in his first year as head coach, is reportedly under scrutiny after a challenging season. Bedard claims Vrabel, recently dismissed by the Tennessee Titans, would be keen on the head coaching role in New England. Additionally, McDaniels, a former Patriots offensive coordinator, might join Vrabel as part of a coaching overhaul.
“(Vrabel) would have an interest in coaching the New England Patriots,” Bedard said. “I think there’s a pretty good chance that Josh McDaniels would come with him. That’s my understanding. That’s what I’m hearing.”
The prospect of a Vrabel-McDaniels tandem could appeal to team owner Robert Kraft. Vrabel, a former linebacker for the Patriots, was a key player during their Super Bowl victories in the early 2000s, while McDaniels was instrumental as an offensive assistant in the team’s six championship runs during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.
The Patriots’ 3-11 record following their loss to the Arizona Cardinals has intensified scrutiny on the coaching staff. Mayo, who was previously seen as the coach-in-waiting, may face additional pressure as Kraft, now 83, aims to rebuild the team’s reputation post-Brady and Belichick.
Although Kraft initially backed Mayo as Belichick’s successor, Vrabel’s availability and McDaniels’ potential involvement could make for a compelling alternative. The Patriots’ leadership may soon face tough decisions about the future direction of the franchise.
