With Derek Carr sidelined for Week 15 due to injury, rookie quarterback Jake Haener is set to make his NFL starting debut for the New Orleans Saints. The team, still searching for stability after Drew Brees’ retirement, has cycled through a series of quarterbacks, including Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, and Carr, each with limited success.

Derek Carr’s early performances this season offered glimpses of hope, briefly putting the Saints into Super Bowl conversations. However, a series of injuries derailed his progress. Carr’s struggles have not gone unnoticed, with criticism coming from both fans and teammates, most notably wide receiver Michael Thomas. Now, with Carr out again, the Saints will look to Haener to step up in a pivotal matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Jake Haener: The Saints’ New Signal-Caller

As reported by Saints insider Nick Underhill, Jake Haener will take the reins in Week 15. This will be the rookie’s first NFL start, presenting both risks and opportunities. Haener’s performance could swing dramatically—from the infamy of a Nathan Peterman-like debut riddled with mistakes to a breakout game that positions him as a legitimate option moving forward.

Haener’s Path to the NFL

Selected in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Haener has spent the season developing within the Saints’ system. While he has seen limited action, completing 48.3% of his passes for one touchdown and no interceptions, he has yet to operate as a full-game starter.

Haener’s collegiate career at Fresno State highlighted his potential. Over three seasons with the Bulldogs, he threw for 68 touchdowns against 18 interceptions, improving his accuracy each year. In his final season in 2022, Haener posted a 72% completion rate, showcasing his growth as a passer. Before his time at Fresno State, Haener began his college journey with the Washington Huskies, though he sat out the 2019 season.

A Crucial Test for Haener and the Saints

This weekend’s game will be a critical test for both Haener and the Saints. The rookie’s ability to lead the offense will likely influence the team’s playoff aspirations and potentially his own future within the organization. Saints fans will watch closely, hopeful for a spark in what has been an unpredictable season.
