The Chicago Cubs could be primed to make a significant impact in the trade market this offseason, given the assets they have at their disposal. One of their most intriguing trade possibilities involves Cody Bellinger, whose $27.5 million salary for 2025 may not be ideal for the Cubs. This situation has led to speculation about Bellinger’s potential departure, with the Cubs also being linked to Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker, who could soon be available.
Despite having a solid rotation led by Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele, the Cubs are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their starting pitching. MLB.com’s Brian Murphy has suggested a trade that would bring Seattle Mariners starter Luis Castillo to Chicago. In exchange, the Cubs would send Nico Hoerner, Cam Smith, and Brandon Birdsell to Seattle.
According to Murphy, bolstering the Cubs’ rotation is a primary need going into the winter meetings. However, with top-tier free-agent starters like Max Fried recently signing a massive contract with the Yankees, the Cubs are unlikely to pursue high-priced players in free agency. Castillo, though not inexpensive, is seen as a relatively affordable option given his solid track record. With a contract that runs through 2027, Castillo is expected to cost about $24 million annually over the next three years, making him a valuable addition to any team looking for a reliable starter who can maintain an ERA below 4.00 and consistently pitch over 170 innings.
Castillo, a three-time All-Star, signed a five-year, $108 million extension with the Mariners in 2022. His experience could benefit Cubs pitchers like Imanaga and Steele, especially if the Cubs decide to move on from Jameson Taillon.
The Mariners, who have more pressing concerns on offense and in the infield, could be interested in acquiring infield help through a trade for Castillo. Murphy points out that Hoerner, known for his exceptional defense, would be a valuable addition to the Mariners’ infield, as he ranks fourth in fWAR among second basemen since 2023. Additionally, Smith could offer a solution at third base for Seattle, while Birdsell would provide future pitching depth to help the Mariners’ rotation.
The Cubs, with one of the deepest farm systems in MLB, have numerous options for improving their roster for 2025. By leveraging their talent pipeline and shedding veteran contracts like Hoerner’s, a trade for Castillo could help propel them toward a playoff push.
