The Seattle Seahawks face key roster decisions heading into the 2025 season, including addressing their aging wide receiver corps. While attention has largely focused on other positional needs, the team’s need to infuse youth into the receiver room is becoming increasingly evident. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has emerged as the Seahawks’ top target, followed by DK Metcalf. However, a significant gap exists before veteran Tyler Lockett, signaling a potential shift in the team’s hierarchy at wide receiver.
As the Seahawks work to get under the salary cap, Lockett’s future with the team appears uncertain. According to Bleacher Report’s latest analysis, cutting Lockett could save Seattle $17 million in cap space. With the team currently projected to face a $6 million deficit in the offseason, this move may be necessary. The report also suggests the Seahawks could target Tutu Atwell, a free agent from the Los Angeles Rams, as a cost-effective replacement.
Atwell, known for his speed and vertical playmaking ability, would fill a void in Seattle’s receiver room that neither Lockett nor Metcalf currently addresses. While Lockett remains a reliable target, his deep-threat capabilities have waned, and Metcalf’s skillset is geared more toward contested catches and physicality. Atwell’s presence could complement Smith-Njigba’s strengths in short and intermediate routes while stretching opposing defenses and opening opportunities for the entire offense.
Selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Rams, Atwell has shown flashes of potential despite limited opportunities. Over 50 games, he has totaled 92 receptions, 1,288 yards, and four touchdowns, often overshadowed by stars like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. His addition to Seattle’s offense would bring a new dynamic at a fraction of Lockett’s cost.
While Lockett’s departure would mark the end of an era, his decline in production this season suggests it may be time for the Seahawks to move forward. Honoring Lockett’s contributions with a place in the Ring of Honor would be a fitting tribute as the team looks to refresh its WR corps.
