Caleb Banks to Return for Senior Season, Boosting Florida Gators’ Defense in 2025

The Florida Gators are set to gain a significant boost for the 2025 season, as standout defensive lineman Caleb Banks has opted to return for his senior year instead of declaring for the NFL Draft. This decision, reported by Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, comes after an impressive 2024 campaign where Banks emerged as one of the team’s key defensive assets. Over his last three games, Banks totaled 3.5 sacks, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, showcasing his growing impact on the field. Unfortunately, his season ended prematurely when he was injured in the first quarter of the regular season finale against Florida State, limiting his ability to contribute further in that game.

The late-season surge in Banks’ performance caught the attention of scouts, and his potential to make an immediate impact at the next level made him a candidate for the NFL Draft. However, the redshirt junior chose to prioritize another season with Florida, continuing his development and enhancing his draft stock further. Head coach Billy Napier expressed pride in Banks’ progress, noting his hard work and increased role within the team. Napier highlighted how Banks had gone from playing only 58 snaps in his previous season at Louisville to taking on 300 plays last year, culminating in his starting role and significant contributions in 2024. Napier believes Banks has the potential to achieve great things and is poised for a bright future.

Florida Gators keep losing recruits under Billy Napier. It's not as bad as it seems.

Banks’ return is especially critical for Florida, as the Gators were set to lose key interior linemen Cam Jackson, Desmond Watson, and Joey Slackman due to the expiration of their eligibility. This left the team with a line composed mostly of underclassmen lacking starting experience. With Banks’ veteran presence, Florida will be better positioned to maintain its defensive strength.

Banks joined Florida in 2023 as a transfer from Louisville, and his decision marks the first instance of a draft-eligible Gator choosing to stay for the following season. Additionally, following the team’s win against FSU, freshman quarterback DJ Lagway emphasized his commitment to retaining current players while also focusing on recruiting and building the team’s momentum moving forward. Lagway pointed out that maintaining the roster’s core was his top priority to ensure a successful and competitive season ahead.
