The first Mets starting lineup from spring training is out. The first Mets starting lineup from spring training is out.

Today, the New York Mets kick off their Grapefruit League campaign against the St. Louis Cardinals at 1pm. The initial lineup is now available. Who’s prepared for some instant unpredictability?

Mets starting lineup vs. the Cardinals

Here’s the lineup card submitted by Carlos Mendoza:

1) DJ Stewart (RF)
2) Francisco Lindor (SS)
3) Pete Alonso (1B)
4) Brett Baty (3B)
5) Mark Vientos, DH.
6) José Iglesias, 2B
7) Trayce Thompson (CF)
8. Tomas Nido, C
9) Taylor Kohlwey (LF)

The Mets will have Tylor Megill on the pitcher’s mound. Since his start was announced, Megill’s status has shifted from being pitching depth to a strong contender for the Opening Day roster, potentially replacing Kodai Senga. He’s in a competition with pitchers like Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto, and the dark horse candidate Max Kranick. However, today’s performance, consisting of just an inning or two, won’t likely resolve this competition.

The Mets swiftly integrated some regular players like Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso into game action, simulating conditions close to Opening Day. Alongside them are lesser-known players, including minor league signings with major league experience.

Jose Iglesias and Trayce Thompson are recognizable names in baseball. Both joined the Mets on minor league contracts this offseason, bringing varied success from their careers.

The ninth spot in the lineup introduces an intriguing new name. Taylor Kohlwey has excelled in Triple-A for the San Diego Padres. With remaining minor league options, he could potentially join the Mets roster earlier than more familiar names like Thompson and Iglesias, who might be designated for assignment. Kohlwey offers flexibility for experimentation due to his available options.

Though it’s just spring training, the decision to start the lineup with DJ Stewart seems somewhat arbitrary, indicating early confidence in him.

Baseball has returned, and while game results are inconsequential, individual performances hold significance for some players.
