BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head coach Teri Moren addressed the media after the Hoosiers’ dominant 95-27 exhibition victory over Maryville on Wednesday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Here’s a recap of Moren’s comments:
Opening Statement:
Teri Moren expressed excitement about returning to Assembly Hall, noting her players’ enthusiasm for the opportunity. She mentioned how Maryville had recently secured a 21-point win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, emphasizing that she encouraged her players to approach the game with seriousness. She commended her team’s focus, fast pace, and ball movement, highlighting areas of strength, such as their 21 assists, while also identifying turnovers and early missed three-pointers as areas to work on.
Moren praised individual players like Shay, who logged significant minutes due to the absence of several guards. Despite some players being sidelined, she was proud of the team’s balance and effort.
On Injuries:
Moren provided updates on the injury statuses of several players: Syd sat out as a precaution after tweaking her ankle; Lexi Bargesser is dealing with a foot injury, and Lenee Beaumont has a minor knee issue that surfaced over the summer. Sydney Fenn will not participate this season due to a knee surgery for a pre-existing injury.
On Lilly Meister’s Confidence:
Moren was pleased with Lilly Meister’s performance, going 9-for-11 from the field, which she hopes will boost her confidence. Although Meister can’t replace Mackenzie Holmes directly, Moren emphasized the importance of her steady presence, along with Karoline Striplin’s strong play.
On Yarden Garzon’s Role as Point Guard:
Moren highlighted Garzon’s versatility, praising her ability to play multiple positions due to her size, passing, and shooting skills. She mentioned that Garzon enjoys having the ball and values her as a decision-maker in various offensive sets.
On Julianna LaMendola:
LaMendola’s competitive drive and flexibility to play various positions were noted, with Moren mentioning her growth in handling mistakes and staying focused on the next play.
On Defensive Goals:
Moren explained Indiana’s goal to hold opponents to 65 points, as well as a new defensive objective focused on “kills” (three consecutive stops). She praised her team for exceeding the target of five to seven “kills” per game, achieving 12 against Maryville.
On Scoring Droughts:
Moren attributed a few scoring lulls to “cobwebs” from early-season play, noting that her team played a bit too individually in the first half. They aimed to simplify their offense and limit turnovers in the second half.
On Shay Ciezki:
Moren described Ciezki as a tenacious, vocal player who can shoot and facilitate. She praised Ciezki’s toughness and seamless adjustment to Indiana’s system after transferring from Penn State.
On Meister’s Patience:
Reflecting on Meister’s journey, Moren expressed pride in players like her who persist through limited playing time and now have their moment to shine. She stressed that Meister doesn’t need to be anyone but herself, appreciating her patience and hard work.
