Evan Mobley’s growth is pivotal to the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ potential this season and in the near future. While he’s already established himself as an elite defender, it’s time for him to make noticeable strides on offense.

A significant aspect of this development involves Evan Mobley taking on a more active role in initiating the Cleveland Cavaliers’ offense, rather than waiting to receive the ball. “It’s a big part of his development and growth—those decisions he’s making with the ball,” said Kenny Atkinson following Cleveland’s win over the New York Knicks.

“His whole life, he’s had a point guard making plays, and he was usually setting screens. Now, we’re saying, ‘You bring it up.’ There will be some growing pains, but he’s putting in the work on his decision-making.”

Though this is a new role for Evan Mobley and will naturally involve some mistakes, Atkinson highlights that having him initiate the offense is something we’ll continue to see.

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach added, “If you look at the stats, with him bringing up the ball in transition, so far, knock on wood, it’s been really effective. So, you’ll see more of it.”

After a strong season opener, Mobley’s stats have leveled a bit; he’s currently averaging 17.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists through the Cavaliers’ first four games.

However, anyone watching him this first week can see Mobley’s added physicality, confidence, and assertiveness on offense. As Atkinson points out, Mobley’s involvement in initiating plays may have some learning curves, but it’s essential to unlocking his full potential—something fans will see more of as the season progresses.
