New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo didn’t seem fazed by the poor performance of his offensive line during Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets. In the fourth quarter, Mayo pulled Jacoby Brissett, who had been sacked five times and endured 10 quarterback hits, and replaced him with rookie Drake Maye.

According to PFF, Brissett was pressured on 52.2% of his dropbacks. Despite Maye nearly throwing an interception on his first NFL pass and taking a hard hit while scrambling, he completed his first pass to Antonio Gibson—but was still sacked due to the offensive line’s struggles.

Though the Patriots started to gain momentum and got close to the end zone, they ran out of time. Maye, who has the potential to be a solid dual-threat quarterback with his speed and strong arm, finished 4-for-8 with 22 yards passing and two carries for 12 yards.

However, the decision to put Maye in—especially with two starting offensive linemen injured—raised eyebrows, as the quarterback position wasn’t the issue. Mayo will have to answer for this controversial move.
