In an uncommon in-division trade, the New York Jets have strategically sent defensive back and return specialist Brandon Codrington to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a swap of late-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

For the Jets, this trade accomplishes multiple objectives. Codrington impressed during the preseason with strong averages of 17.9 yards on kickoffs and 19.6 yards on punts, showcasing his special teams value. Despite his performance, the Jets’ depth in the defensive backfield led them to determine that Codrington’s talents could be more effectively utilized elsewhere.

On the other hand, the Bills are aiming to bolster their special teams, especially after the departure of returner Andy Isabella. Codrington’s abilities as a returner make him a valuable asset, adding depth and competition to the secondary, particularly with rookie Daequan Hardy’s injury concerns and the offseason exits of veteran defensive backs Tredavious White, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde.

This trade is a low-risk move for the Bills, as the swap of late-round picks allows them to evaluate Codrington’s potential with minimal financial and roster impact.

Though rivals typically relish getting one up on each other, this trade proved beneficial for both sides. The Jets cleared a roster spot to address another position of need while enhancing their draft capital. Meanwhile, the Bills gained valuable young talent for their special teams and defensive backfield. Codrington also comes out ahead, securing a spot on the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent with a legitimate chance to contribute right away in his rookie year.
