San Diego Padres second baseman Luis Arráez will miss the 2024 MLB All-Star Game due to a thumb injury. Although he was named to the National League bench, Arráez will sit out to allow his thumb to heal after injuring it during a slide to third base in a June game against the Washington Nationals. Despite this, he plans to attend the game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, with his family.
This marks Arráez’s third consecutive All-Star selection. After being traded from the Miami Marlins to the Padres in early May, he has continued to perform at an All-Star level, posting a .315/.340/.381 slash line with two home runs and 19 RBIs. He ranks fifth in MLB in batting average and recently had a three-hit game against the Atlanta Braves.
The two-time batting champion is expected to return to play without missing additional time, using the All-Star Break to rest. The Padres will resume play on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians after the break.
“I don’t feel 100 percent. But every time I touch the line, I want to give 100 percent to the manager and to my teammates,” Arraez said, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. will also be unable to participate due to a stress reaction in his femur.
