Newcastle United are now out of the woods when it comes to their PSR scares this summer and will be looking to make a splash in the market.
Eddie Howe’s team had to part ways with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh over the weekend. The club let go of the two young players to address financial issues.
However, this move now gives the Magpies the flexibility to invest in new players this summer, following a season that truly challenged Howe’s squad depth.
Newcastle has already brought in Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer and secured Lewis Hall permanently during this summer’s transfer window.
It appears that the Magpies are now progressing in their efforts to acquire another defender, as Howe aims to strengthen his defensive options further.
Newcastle advancing in race to sign £42m centre-back
The Magpies entered the summer transfer window with some issues in their defense, as both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are dealing with significant injuries.
Despite not needing to worry about a busy schedule due to failing to qualify for European competitions, there are still concerns about the quality of cover for Botman.
As a result, Newcastle has compiled a list of potential center-back signings, with one player, in particular, drawing significant interest.
According to GiveMeSport, Newcastle is progressing in their pursuit of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.
The Germany international is estimated to cost Newcastle around £42m this summer. However, AC Milan is reluctant to sell him, as journalist Ben Jacobs explained:
“Newcastle are advancing on Malick Thiaw as well, the German defender who’s on their shortlist to potentially be a new center-back,” he said.
“AC Milan don’t really want to sell, so that isn’t an easy deal to get over the line, and this is why Newcastle were looking to bring in some funds from these outgoings.”
Malick Thiaw already likened to Sergio Ramos
Having joined Milan from Schalke in 2022, the German defender has already made 54 appearances for the Serie A side.
With three years remaining on his contract, the Italian club is in a strong position to negotiate Thiaw’s future.
Thiaw has garnered significant praise early in his career, with the AC Milan website drawing comparisons to Sergio Ramos and Joel Matip.
Moreover, Thiaw is a versatile player who can provide Newcastle with cover at center-back, right-back, and defensive midfield.
