In February, it appeared that Auburn football legend Cam Newton had decided to retire from the NFL. However, during the June 12 episode of his “4th&1” podcast, Newton clarified that he had never officially retired from football.
“I haven’t played football in four years,” Newton acknowledged (via Bleacher Report). “Do I think somebody is going to take a chance on me now? No. That’s me being honest. Cam, are you planning on retiring? No.”
Back in February, Newton had stated, “I’m not a football player no more,” and identified himself as a YouTuber instead (via Boardroom).
“So you’re asking me, ‘Okay Cam, are you still playing football?’ My answer is ‘Hell no.’ But I’m busier than I’ve ever been because I could take what football taught me and implement it in every single one of my businesses,” Newton explained. “The structure, the discipline, the sacrifice, the mental stamina that’s needed. And that’s the conversation. The grind. The joy is in the journey.”

For Newton, time off has proven to be beneficial. His 2018 season marked the beginning of his struggles due to a persistent shoulder injury that sidelined him for most of 2019. When he attempted to lead the New England Patriots in the post-Tom Brady era in 2020, he was still not fully recovered and faced challenges fitting in with Bill Belichick’s system.
In 2021, although he still didn’t look fully healthy throwing the football, Newton returned to the Carolina Panthers. He demonstrated commendable effort, especially in the running game, providing a performance he could be proud of.
If Newton’s career is indeed over, he has tied up loose ends with the Panthers. However, given the team’s ongoing issues with Bryce Young, another stint as a mentor and a potential change-of-pace quarterback could be beneficial for the Queen City.
