Seattle needed a third quarterback on their roster and they signed one on Thursday.

The Seattle Seahawks have their quarterback positions secured with Geno Smith and Sam Howell, but needed a third option in case either gets injured. NFL teams are now allowed to have a third quarterback on the sidelines during games as a precaution. Additionally, having a quarterback on the practice squad is beneficial.

General manager John Schneider likely saw potential in quarterback P.J. Walker during the Seahawks’ victory over the Cleveland Browns last season. Although the game was unexpected for Seattle to win, Walker’s inefficiency played a part in their victory.

Nonetheless, Schneider saw promise in Walker, leading to Seattle signing him this week to compete for a roster spot, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Walker has an interesting journey; after initially not making an NFL team, he excelled in the XFL, leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns.

Seahawks sign a quarterback to compete with Geno Smith and Sam Howell

Walker started two games for the Browns last year, including one against Seattle. In Week 8 at Lumen Field, he completed 15 of 31 passes for 248 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions, and ran six times for 27 yards. Those 248 yards were the third most in his career, with his highest being 317 yards against the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

However, Walker’s overall stats are unimpressive. His career passer rating is a low 60.0, with six touchdown passes and 16 interceptions. If Walker ends up playing for Seattle, it could spell trouble for the team. Comparatively, Geno Smith would look much better.

Despite this, Schneider must have seen some potential in Walker to sign him. At 29, Walker still has the possibility of being a backup for a few more years. Seahawks fans can only hope he won’t have to start for the team.
