The Michigan football team will need new players to step up in 2024 as they are losing many key players from the 2023 roster. The Wolverines were packed with talent last season, culminating in a national championship victory. Now, Michigan aims to maintain their momentum and it’s time for emerging players to leave their mark on the program. Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently highlighted several potential breakout players for the 2024 season, with a particular focus on Wolverines defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows.

“Michigan’s roster will look a lot different in 2024, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less talented,” PFF stated. “There are plenty of high-caliber recruits ready to step up, especially in the defensive backfield. McBurrows is one such player poised to shine. He played 182 snaps last season, earning a 73.1 overall grade and a 73.9 coverage grade. In 2023, McBurrows logged seven solo tackles without any misses and made four run stops. He was targeted in coverage 13 times, allowing just five catches for 40 yards, while recording one interception and two pass breakups.”

Ja’Den McBurrows appears ready to take the next step after a solid 2023 season. He debuted for Michigan football in 2021 with two total tackles, didn’t play in 2022, and then made significant strides last season. With many talented players departing from the secondary, the Wolverines will need to reload, and McBurrows is definitely a player to watch.

Michigan’s defense will be their strength once again

Michigan football did lose a significant amount of talent from their secondary, but they are retaining some key players, including the unit’s standout, Will Johnson. Johnson, who is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is expected to have a stellar 2024 season and is arguably the best cornerback in college football.

Despite the return of Johnson, the Wolverines are facing the departure of several key players. Mike Sainristil, the leader of the secondary, has moved on to the NFL along with Josh Wallace, who had a strong 2023 season. Keon Sabb, initially expected to start in 2024, transferred to Alabama. Additionally, Rod Moore, who clinched the victory against Ohio State with an interception, will miss significant time due to a recent ACL tear. Although there is a chance he might return during the season, his recovery timeline remains uncertain.

The Wolverines have a lot to replace, but their defense is still projected to be among the best in college football, largely due to their formidable defensive line. Mason Graham, another future first-round pick, will anchor the line along with Kenneth Grant and Josiah Stewart. This unit is anticipated to be one of the top defensive lines in the country.

If Michigan’s defense performs as expected, the Wolverines will be competitive with any team in the nation. Last season, they didn’t allow more than 24 points in a game. Replicating that defensive performance this year will provide the team with a solid foundation for another successful season.
