Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a persisting knee problem. His performance has noticeably declined over the past few games, batting only .159 with an OPS of 457 since sustaining the injury about 13 games ago. Despite being positioned fifth in the lineup during some of these games, his struggles have persisted. Hopefully, some time on the injured list will allow him to recuperate and regain his form.

In Swanson’s absence, Nico Hoerner is expected to take over at shortstop, with Nick Madrigal and Miles Mastrobuoni handling second base duties. However, rather than Mastrobuoni, some suggest giving Luis Vazquez a chance. Vazquez has been hitting well in Iowa and is known for his excellent fielding skills, making him a potentially valuable addition to the Cubs’ lineup. Given Mastrobuoni’s underwhelming performance thus far, it could be worth exploring alternative options to bolster the team’s infield.

The Cubs outfield is just getting back together

The Cubs have faced numerous challenges due to injuries throughout the season, with outfielder Mike Tauchman emerging as a key contributor to bolster the struggling offense. However, additional reinforcements have been necessary. Cody Bellinger’s return from fractured ribs provided an immediate boost, and the impending return of Seiya Suzuki could further strengthen the lineup.

One player whose performance has been lacking despite being in the lineup is Ian Happ. With a batting average of .225, an OPS of .649, and just one home run, his production falls short of expectations. Fortunately, the Cubs now have options to explore.

One approach could involve giving Tauchman more playing time in left field while utilizing Patrick Wisdom as the designated hitter. Alternatively, Pete Crow-Armstrong could continue to patrol center field, with Bellinger, Suzuki, or Tauchman rotating as the designated hitter.

In Iowa, outfielder Owen Caissie has shown promise. Despite a slow start, Caissie has picked up momentum and currently boasts an OPS of .852 while also providing solid defense. Considering his performance, Caissie could be a valuable addition to the Cubs’ roster, providing much-needed depth and versatility in the outfield.
