Max Verstappen is anticipating the significant departure of Red Bull’s lead engineer, Adrian Newey, following discussions with Christian Horner earlier this month where he emphasized Newey’s importance. There have been numerous leaks suggesting that the 65-year-old British chief technology officer will exit before his contract ends in 2025.

Reportedly, Newey is discontented with the internal power dynamics at Red Bull, especially in light of the recent controversy surrounding Horner. Despite being cleared of allegations of misconduct after an internal inquiry, an appeal is ongoing.

Newey has been instrumental in Red Bull’s evolution into a dominant force in Formula One, designing the cars that Verstappen has piloted to three consecutive championships. His tenure with the team since 2005, spanning two dominant periods, makes his departure a significant setback for Red Bull.

Speculation has been rife for weeks regarding the futures of key Red Bull figures, including Newey, Horner, and senior advisor Helmut Marko. When rumors surfaced linking Aston Martin with Newey and the possibility of a lucrative move arose, Verstappen conveyed to Horner the team’s profound appreciation for their chief engineer.

Addressing the matter at the Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen articulated, “We have a large group of people collaborating on the car, so it’s a collective effort to achieve success. Everyone’s input is valued in creating the car we have today. Therefore, having someone like Adrian as part of the team is immensely beneficial, and many individuals contribute to the development of our current car.”
