Bill Self, Kansas Face Major Setback After Rough Season End and Key Transfer Losses

Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks are reeling after a disappointing end to their college basketball season.

As a No. 7 seed, Kansas was knocked out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 79-72 to the Arkansas Razorbacks—a stunning and frustrating early exit.

The offseason hasn’t offered much relief. Following the tournament, Self’s squad took another hit as guard Zeke Mayo officially entered the transfer portal, per Transfer Portal. He became the second player to depart on Monday, following the exit of guard Shakeel Moore.

Mayo’s departure is a significant blow. He was the Jayhawks’ second-leading scorer behind All-Big 12 standout Hunter Dickinson. In his lone season at Kansas, Mayo averaged 14.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game after transferring from South Dakota State, where he played for three seasons.

Over his college career, Mayo has posted strong numbers—15.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game across four seasons.

Now, Kansas is left with some major gaps to address. Mayo is out, Dickinson has used up his eligibility, and KJ Adams is also on his way out due to graduation.

However, there’s hope on the horizon. Kansas boasts a strong 2025 recruiting class, headlined by the No. 2 overall prospect in the country, Darryn Peterson, giving Self a promising foundation to build around.
