Aroldis Chapman was among four former All-Stars—alongside Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman, and Walker Buehler—to sign with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. His one-year, $10.75 million deal may not have generated as much buzz as other acquisitions, especially since the 37-year-old hasn’t held a full-time closer role since 2021.

Heading into Spring Training, Chapman had a chance to seize the closer position, competing against Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten. Now, with Opening Day approaching, he appears to be the frontrunner for the role. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the seven-time All-Star is likely to get the first shot at closing games for Boston.

While the closer position remains officially up for grabs, Chapman’s dominant performances have set him apart. His velocity and command have impressed, while Hendriks has worked through early command struggles, and Slaten seems better suited for a high-leverage bullpen role.

Chapman has delivered strong results in six Spring Training outings, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.38 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings. With 335 career saves—trailing only Kenley Jansen (447) and Craig Kimbrel (440) among active pitchers—Chapman brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Both Jansen and Kimbrel had successful stints with the Red Sox, with Jansen earning an All-Star nod before departing this offseason. Now, Chapman aims to follow in their footsteps and return to All-Star form for the first time since 2021.
