Vikings Prioritize Coaching Staff Extensions After Locking in O’Connell

The Minnesota Vikings checked off a major offseason priority by securing head coach Kevin O’Connell with a multiyear contract extension. Now, their focus shifts to keeping O’Connell’s coaching staff intact.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips both have contracts expiring after the 2025 season, and according to the Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling, the Vikings aim to extend both this spring.

“My understanding is they want to get new deals done for both of those guys this spring,” Goessling said on the Daily Delivery podcast. He also suggested that special teams coordinator Matt Daniels could be included in these discussions, as O’Connell has emphasized retaining his staff.

Phillips has been a key part of O’Connell’s system since joining him from the Rams in 2022. Under his leadership, the Vikings have ranked consistently well in offensive yardage despite dealing with a quarterback shuffle in 2023 following Kirk Cousins’ injury. Phillips also played a role in Sam Darnold’s resurgence in 2024, demonstrating his ability to adapt and develop talent.

On the defensive side, Flores has made a significant impact since replacing Ed Donatell. The Vikings’ defense improved from one of the worst in the league in 2022 to ranking 16th in yards allowed and 14th in points allowed in 2023. In 2024, they remained 16th in yards allowed but climbed to fifth in points allowed, solidifying Flores’ reputation as a defensive mastermind. His name was frequently mentioned in head coaching discussions this offseason.

Beyond securing their coordinators, the Vikings are also searching for a replacement for assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski, who left for an offensive coordinator role with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Udinski had a strong connection with J.J. McCarthy, making his replacement a critical hire.

Another pressing matter is the future of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, whose contract also expires in 2025. While there isn’t a sense of urgency on his extension, Goessling noted that as the NFL Draft approaches on April 24, any delay in a deal could raise questions about the team’s long-term direction.

With the draft and key contract negotiations looming, the Vikings have several major decisions to finalize in the coming months.
