The Pittsburgh Steelers are likely in the market for a new quarterback this offseason, as both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to hit free agency. General manager Omar Khan may be looking for a fresh start at the position, with team owner Art Rooney already hinting that both quarterbacks won’t be returning. However, there’s still a possibility that one could stay.
During a media appearance on Feb. 6, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer shared his perspective on Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation. He believes Wilson is unlikely to return for the 2025 season, while Fields’ future remains uncertain.
“I don’t think that’s gonna happen, either,” Glazer said regarding Wilson’s return. “I think you’ll see a new start for Russell somewhere.”
As for Fields, Glazer admitted, “I got no idea… I don’t know. I don’t think they know who their starting quarterback will be yet.”
With Pittsburgh potentially in need of a new starter, CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani suggests Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford as a viable option.
The Steelers are facing another possible reset at quarterback, and the uncertainty is compounded by their playoff struggles. Despite Mike Tomlin’s incredible streak of 18 straight seasons without a losing record, Pittsburgh hasn’t won a postseason game since 2016. The team has dropped six straight playoff matchups, allowing at least 28 points in each—a record-setting slump in NFL history.
So what’s the best path forward? Trading up for a rookie like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders? Engaging in a bidding war for Sam Darnold? Taking a risk on 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers?
Perhaps Stafford presents the best solution—if he becomes available.
Stafford’s future in Los Angeles is uncertain, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reporting that a new deal may be necessary for the veteran quarterback to stay. Additionally, the Rams are reportedly open to trading his close friend and star receiver, Cooper Kupp. If Stafford decides to move on, the Steelers should be aggressive in pursuing him.
At 37, Stafford remains one of the league’s top pocket passers, throwing for 20 touchdowns and just eight interceptions in 2024. He has led the Rams to three winning seasons in four years, capping it off with a Super Bowl victory in 2021.
Due to his age and contract, Stafford’s trade value may not be sky-high, meaning Pittsburgh could potentially land him for a couple of Day 2 picks or even a single first-rounder. However, the Steelers would need to restructure his deal.
While Stafford may only have a few years left in the league, he remains one of the NFL’s most accurate and dependable quarterbacks. If he becomes available, Pittsburgh should strongly consider making a move to acquire the former No. 1 overall pick.
