The Denver Broncos received mixed news on the personnel front today.
Starting with the bad: Assistant GM Darren Mougey has emerged as a finalist for the New York Jets’ general manager role. Mougey is among two candidates set for a second interview, with a decision from the Jets potentially coming as early as Thursday evening. Adding to Denver’s concerns, the Jets’ new head coach, Aaron Glenn, is reportedly interested in luring Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo to his staff.
Now, for the good news: According to Mike Klis of KUSA-TV, Darren Rizzi is unlikely to join the Chicago Bears as their special teams coordinator. After hiring Ben Johnson as head coach, the Bears were rumored to target Rizzi but now appear inclined to retain in-house ST coach Richard Hightower.
This development bodes well for Denver, as Rizzi is reportedly the Broncos’ top pick to replace recently-fired special teams coach Ben Kotwica. While Rizzi is also in the mix for the New Orleans Saints’ head coach position, he’s not considered a leading candidate, increasing the likelihood he could join the Broncos this offseason.
