The Miami Dolphins have been without their starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, since he was sidelined in Week 17 due to a hip injury. This injury came at a crucial time in the season as the Dolphins were fighting for a playoff spot.
Ahead of the Dolphins’ crucial season finale against the New York Jets, ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided an update on Tagovailoa’s condition.
“Tyler Huntley is expected to step in for Tua Tagovailoa today, in a game the Dolphins must win to keep their playoff hopes alive,” said Schefter. “This is a similar hip injury to what he dealt with in college. It’s a different type of injury. He missed last week, and it seems unlikely that he’ll play this week. However, if the Dolphins manage to make the playoffs, Tua believes he can return, but that remains to be seen.”
Huntley had already filled in for Tagovailoa in a crucial game against Cleveland the previous week, where he performed admirably, throwing for 225 yards and a touchdown, along with rushing for 52 yards and another score to help secure the win.
With the Dolphins now at 8-8, they’re on the brink of the AFC playoff race. To advance, they need a win over the Jets and some assistance from the Kansas City Chiefs, who are facing the 9-7 Denver Broncos. However, the Chiefs are expected to rest their starters. Still, without a victory, Miami’s playoff hopes would be dashed.
This marks the second time this season that Tagovailoa has missed games due to injury, adding to his growing list of health concerns.
Tagovailoa’s injury history dates back to his college days at Alabama, where he dealt with several issues, the most notable being concussions. Earlier in 2024, he was sidelined again with another concussion. During his time at Alabama, he also suffered a dislocated hip and injuries to his ribs, hands, shoulder, and ankle.
Now, Tagovailoa is hoping his team can make the playoffs, allowing him a chance to return and contribute to their postseason push.
