Alex Ovechkin has been a standout player in the NHL ever since he was chosen first overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft. Now, over 20 years later, the Moscow-born forward has etched his name in the history books, becoming one of the most prolific and celebrated players in professional hockey. His achievements were recognized in 2017 when he was named one of the NHL’s 100 greatest players of all time.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ovechkin has accomplished numerous feats that few, if any, have matched. He is one of only two players in league history to score 700 goals before turning 35, alongside Wayne Gretzky. Additionally, Ovechkin is one of only three players to reach 800 career goals, joining the ranks of Gretzky and Gordie Howe. He is also part of an elite group of six players who have scored 700 goals and recorded 700 assists in their careers, a list that includes Gretzky, Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Marcel Dionne, and Phil Esposito.
Ovechkin holds several other NHL records, including the most empty-net goals, the most power-play goals, and the most shots on goal in league history. His career also boasts significant playoff success, highlighted by his victory in the 2018 Stanley Cup, where he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the postseason.
Beyond his championship success, Ovechkin has earned three Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP (2008, 2009, 2013), and three Ted Lindsay Awards as the best player as voted by his peers (2008, 2009, 2010). He has also been selected for 13 NHL All-Star Games and has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer nine times.
On the international stage, Ovechkin has won multiple medals at the Ice Hockey World Championships, including three gold medals (2008, 2012, 2014), two silver medals (2010, 2015), and four bronze medals (2005, 2007, 2016, 2019). Additionally, he has earned gold at the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championships and silver at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championships.
In the KHL, Ovechkin also found success, winning a Gagarin Cup in 2013 and a Russian Superleague title in 2005. With all of his records, accolades, and triumphs, Alex Ovechkin’s legacy in hockey is undeniable, securing his place as one of the greatest players to ever step onto the ice.
