The Boston Bruins have called up Fabian Lysell, their 2021 first-round pick, from the Providence Bruins on Saturday, giving him the opportunity to make his NHL debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets at TD Garden. The decision was made by Bruins general manager Don Sweeney after the team suffered a 6-2 loss to the Blue Jackets in the first game of their home-and-home series the previous night at Nationwide Arena.
In a pregame press conference, Bruins head coach Joe Sacco confirmed that Lysell would be in the lineup, saying, “He’s going to make his debut tonight.” Sacco praised Lysell’s performance in Providence, noting that the team’s coaching staff and management felt he had earned the chance. The 21-year-old right wing, who stands at 5-11 and weighs 188 pounds, has had a strong season with the Baby Bruins, recording five goals and 12 assists so far. Over 136 AHL games, Lysell has accumulated 34 goals and 70 assists, totaling 104 points.
Sacco mentioned that Lysell would play on the right wing alongside Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau in the game. “It’s exciting obviously, and anytime you get your first game in this league, it is a special event and a memorable day,” said Sacco.
To make room for Lysell, Oliver Wahlstrom (right wing) and John Beecher (center) were listed as healthy scratches. Sacco emphasized that this call-up was a reward for Lysell’s solid play in the AHL. “He’s a guy we feel can lift our power play,” Sacco noted, highlighting Lysell’s offensive strengths. While Lysell is expected to contribute offensively, Sacco mentioned that he will need to adapt to playing both with and without the puck in the NHL.
