Alex-Cora-2-1

The Boston Red Sox are actively seeking to add more power to their lineup as they prepare for the 2025 season. While the roster shows promise, the team remains in need of one or two right-handed hitters to create a more balanced offensive approach. One potential target to fill this gap is Alex Bregman, a two-time All-Star and World Series champion who is currently a free agent.

Bregman, a proven talent both offensively and defensively, has caught the attention of the Red Sox, particularly as a solution for second base. However, the Detroit Tigers are also pursuing the veteran infielder, setting up a competitive bidding war. According to Laura Albanese of Newsday, the Tigers may have the edge in securing Bregman’s services.

“Bregman is one of the best defensive third basemen in the league and no slouch at the plate, though his on-base numbers saw a dip last year,” Albanese remarked. “With a (4.1) WAR in 2024, nearly every team could benefit from his well-rounded play, strike zone awareness, defensive range, and bat-to-ball skills. Given that talks between Bregman and the Houston Astros have reportedly ‘stalled,’ a reunion seems unlikely.”

Albanese predicts that Detroit, a team with significant offseason spending flexibility and a need at third base, could emerge victorious in signing Bregman. The Tigers, led by manager AJ Hinch, have exceeded expectations recently and could use the addition of a player with Bregman’s caliber to continue building momentum.

While Boston has a clear connection to Bregman through manager Alex Cora, who previously worked with him in Houston, Detroit’s competitive push could force the Red Sox to look elsewhere for lineup reinforcements. If the Tigers do secure Bregman, it would be a significant setback for Boston’s efforts to enhance its offensive capabilities.
