The Los Angeles Dodgers have been active in free agency this offseason, making several key moves to improve their roster. However, General Manager Brandon Gomes has made it clear that their work is far from finished.
Starting pitching has been a major concern for the Dodgers in recent seasons, particularly when it comes to maintaining a strong rotation during the postseason. Despite entering the season with a solid pitching staff, injuries have consistently plagued the team, leaving them vulnerable come playoff time.
A prime example came in 2024, when the Dodgers won the World Series with just three starting pitchers. This ongoing issue has led MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger to predict that the Dodgers will pursue former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara in a trade with the Miami Marlins.
Amsinger confidently stated, “Sandy Alcantara’s traded to the Dodgers,” as his co-hosts laughed at the bold prediction. He also suggested that the Dodgers’ front office, led by Peter Bendix, is ready to make bold moves and shake up the roster, particularly for players with major league experience.
For the 2025 season, the Dodgers are projected to feature a six-man rotation. Although Clayton Kershaw has not yet re-signed with the team and may consider retirement after next season, the Dodgers’ pitching staff is looking promising with Dustin May returning after missing all of 2024. May is also in his final year of arbitration before becoming a free agent.
If the Dodgers manage to acquire Alcantara from the Marlins, their rotation could become even more formidable. However, according to Craig Mish of Sportsgrid, the Marlins have informed Alcantara that he is not available for trade this offseason. Alcantara, who underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2023, made his first live batting practice appearance in mid-September and appeared to be in strong form.
The 29-year-old Cy Young winner, who posted a 14-9 record with a career-best 2.28 ERA in 2022, could still be a target for the Dodgers, but it remains uncertain whether the Marlins will part ways with him, despite the Dodgers’ wealth of prospects that could sway the decision.
