The Auburn Tigers have secured a significant addition to their roster with the signing of Virginia Tech offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin. Chaplin finalized his decision on Sunday following a Saturday visit, citing the welcoming atmosphere as a deciding factor. “Just the people,” he told 247 Sports. “I feel like I’m at home here. I don’t have to not be myself. I can be Xavier.”
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and weighing 323 pounds, Chaplin has been a key contributor for the Hokies, starting every game over the past two seasons after being redshirted in his freshman year. His performance in 2023 earned him recognition as a College Football News Third Team All-American. Despite battling a shoulder and bone bruise injury throughout the season, Chaplin allowed only two sacks, zero quarterback hits, and 10 quarterback hurries across 300 pass-blocking opportunities—a testament to his toughness and skill. He also received an honorable mention for the All-ACC team at the season’s conclusion.
Chaplin becomes Auburn’s fourth transfer addition this offseason, joining quarterback Jackson Arnold (Oklahoma), running back Durell Robinson (UConn), and punter Hudson Kaak (Oklahoma State). His arrival is a crucial boost for an offensive line that has room for improvement. Despite ranking sixth in total offense in 2024, the Tigers scored the fifth-fewest points per game in the SEC. Protecting their new quarterback and enhancing run-blocking efficiency are top priorities, and Chaplin’s presence could make a significant impact.
Auburn’s offensive line allowed 27 sacks in 2024, an improvement from 34 in 2023, but they still ranked 10th in the SEC. Adding Chaplin, who brings both experience and a proven track record, is a positive step toward solidifying the line and giving Auburn’s offense the protection and opportunities needed to thrive in the highly competitive SEC landscape.
