Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck wasn’t the only key player to suffer an injury during the SEC Championship game. Punter Brett Thorson, who was playing a critical role in defending a punt return, sustained a knee injury to his non-kicking leg. This injury may have influenced Georgia’s decision to attempt a fake punt later in the game against Texas.
Unfortunately, Thorson’s injury will sideline him for the remainder of the 2024 season as he is set to undergo surgery on his non-kicking leg.
In a statement, Georgia announced, “Punter Brett Thorson sustained a knee injury to his non-kicking leg in Saturday’s contest and will require season-ending surgery.”
Coach Kirby Smart expressed support for Thorson and quarterback Carson Beck, who both are known for their competitive nature and strong work ethic. “Carson and Brett are both fierce competitors and extremely hard workers,” Smart said. “I’m confident they will attack their rehab with the same determination they exhibit in their daily habits. We will be here to support them every step of the way.”
Thorson is recognized as one of the top punters in college football and was a finalist for the prestigious Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s best punter. He has an impressive average of 47.6 yards per punt, with a long of 60 yards, and has placed the ball inside the 20-yard line 22 times.
Drew Miller, the top punter recruit in the nation for the 2024 class, is expected to step in and make his debut for Georgia in the upcoming Sugar Bowl.
