The Las Vegas Raiders will head into the offseason with numerous questions to answer.

With several roster gaps created by expiring contracts or areas in need of upgrades, the Raiders are expected to make significant investments in free agency and the draft to fill key positions.

One major question facing the team is who will be rushing the passer alongside defensive end Maxx Crosby, and the answer could already be on the roster.

Edge rusher Malcolm Koonce seemed poised to solidify a starting role opposite Crosby. The 26-year-old had a breakout year in 2023, recording eight sacks, 43 tackles, and 17 quarterback hits. He was expected to continue his upward trajectory in 2024 and likely command a hefty contract when his rookie deal expired at season’s end.

However, Koonce’s season was derailed by a knee injury just days before the opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, leaving his potential unfulfilled for the year.

Despite the setback, Koonce should still draw interest when he hits free agency in the spring. Though his injury may lower his market value, teams will recognize that young players with a proven track record at premium positions are rare, which will work in Koonce’s favor during negotiations.

Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department believes the Raiders should do everything possible to keep Koonce beyond this season.

“Koonce’s free-agent market will be interesting. He’s a young player with potential at a key position,” said AFC scout Alex Ballentine. “The Raiders should likely try to extend him before he hits the market, with a contract that takes his health into account.”

If Koonce doesn’t return, the Raiders have other options. They may look to 2023 first-round pick Tyree Wilson to step up, though his two sacks in 11 games leave room for improvement. The team will also explore external pass-rushing options in free agency and the draft, though other priorities may take precedence.

A return for Koonce in 2025 makes sense for both the player and the team, but the price must be right. If his market heats up and he’s offered a larger contract elsewhere, the Raiders could face a difficult decision.
