Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has affirmed that 21-year-old Ezra Mam “hasn’t” played his last game for the Broncos following charges stemming from an alleged drug-driving incident in October. Mam, who is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 16, faces charges of driving with a relevant drug in his system and driving without a license. The incident involved a head-on collision in Bardon that reportedly left an Uber driver with severe bruising and a four-year-old passenger with a fractured hip.

After the incident, Mam voluntarily checked into rehab and acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating his commitment to respecting the legal process and regaining the trust of the club and community. While speculation arose about the Broncos potentially terminating Mam’s five-year, $4 million contract, teammate Reece Walsh has publicly appealed for leniency and a second chance for Mam.

Speaking to Brisbane radio station 4BC on Friday, Maguire firmly stated, “No, he hasn’t [played his last game].” He emphasized the need for careful consideration and a thorough review of all aspects of the incident before making decisions. Maguire commended Mam for taking accountability and working on self-improvement while underscoring the seriousness of the matter.

Mam’s legal and financial repercussions are mounting. His rehab stint reportedly cost $100,000, and he may bear financial responsibility for vehicle damages and medical expenses. Fines from both the NRL integrity unit and the Broncos could exceed $50,000, and a suspension of up to three months may delay his return to play until at least the mid-2025 season.

Maguire sees the incident as a turning point for the Broncos, highlighting the importance of culture and responsibility in rebuilding the club’s standards. He called it a wake-up call for all involved and stressed that the organization must use this moment to grow.

Reece Walsh’s support reflects Mam’s standing among his teammates, with the young star expected to rejoin training after completing his rehabilitation. The Broncos remain cautious as they navigate the legal process and the broader implications for the club’s culture and standards.
