The Cincinnati Bengals recently hosted free agent visits from notable veterans, running back Leonard Fournette and cornerback Xavien Howard, but did not sign either player following their visits. Despite the interest in both players, the Bengals opted not to move forward with contracts, citing several factors that impacted their decision.
For Fournette, the Bengals had been evaluating his potential as a backup or insurance option for their backfield, especially after losing running back Zack Moss for the season. However, after meeting with the former Buccaneers star, who has seen his role decrease in recent seasons, the team decided against adding him. Fournette, while capable, may not have fit their vision for the running back rotation, especially considering his past performances, including limited action with the Bills last season.
As for Howard, the Bengals were intrigued by his veteran experience, especially with their secondary needing a potential boost. Howard, known for his strong coverage skills and experience in Miami, had a history with Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo from their time together with the Dolphins. Yet, concerns about Howard’s legal situation and his fit within the team led to the Bengals not finalizing a deal.
Both visits were viewed as an attempt by the Bengals to strengthen their roster in light of their current 4-6 record and playoff aspirations. The Bengals still have the flexibility to pursue other options and may continue looking for opportunities to add depth, especially as they make a late push for the postseason.
