The Pittsburgh Penguins have updated the status of forward Kevin Hayes, who is now listed as week-to-week due to an upper-body injury, as confirmed by head coach Mike Sullivan. Hayes, who sustained the injury during a game against the Islanders last Tuesday, has missed the last two games, though the specific play that caused the injury remains unclear. If necessary, the Penguins could place Hayes on injured reserve retroactively from November 5, and it’s expected he’ll miss at least the next four games.
Hayes, 32, was acquired in June from the Blues along with a second-round pick for 2025, with the Penguins taking on the final two years of his contract (half of which is being retained by the Flyers). So far this season, Hayes has recorded three goals and an assist in 14 games, while averaging a career-low 9:27 of ice time per game.
Meanwhile, Cody Glass is also dealing with an injury, as he was placed on injured reserve with a concussion after the Penguins’ loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday. Glass, 25, has played 14 games for Pittsburgh, tallying four assists, but his concussion indicates a longer recovery period than the minimum seven days for an IR stint. It’s also unclear when exactly Glass sustained the injury, as he played just 4:47 in the game and did not return after the first period. The Penguins acquired Glass in a trade with the Predators this summer.
Both players’ injuries will create significant holes in the Penguins’ lineup, especially with the team’s current struggles to stay healthy.
