After a strong start to his rookie season, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels might miss his first start due to a rib injury sustained on Sunday.

Daniels left the game early in the first half against the Carolina Panthers and was taken for X-rays on his torso before being ruled out with a rib injury.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, head coach Dan Quinn said Daniels is “week-to-week” but remains “hopeful he could play” in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears.

Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft and a Heisman Trophy winner, has had a Rookie of the Year-caliber start, with 1,410 yards and 10 total touchdowns in seven games.

The Week 8 matchup against Chicago could have Daniels facing the No. 1 overall pick, Caleb Williams, in a rare quarterback showdown between the top two draft picks. However, if Daniels’ condition doesn’t improve, the matchup may not happen.

His status will be monitored throughout the week, and Quinn indicated they might wait until game day to make a final decision.
