The Auburn Tigers’ 2024 football season has been a rollercoaster, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The team’s 2-4 record reflects the challenges they’ve faced, including an ongoing struggle with turnovers, which have been a significant factor in their disappointing start. Auburn entered the season with high expectations, but their inability to protect the ball has left them far short of their goals as they approach the midway point. While the team’s offensive struggles are concerning, the emergence of freshman wide receiver Malcolm Simmons has been a silver lining in an otherwise difficult campaign.

Malcolm Simmons, a highly-touted four-star recruit, has wasted no time making an impact. In just six games, he has hauled in 18 receptions for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Though fifth-year senior KeAndre Lambert-Smith leads the Tigers in receiving, Simmons has quickly established himself as one of the team’s top playmakers. His speed, athleticism, and ability to stretch the field have given Auburn’s offense a much-needed spark.

Reflecting on his rapid rise, Simmons credited head coach Hugh Freeze for helping him transition smoothly to the college game. “Coach Freeze told me from the beginning that once I learned the offense, I’d be special,” Simmons said. “By taking things day by day, week by week, and getting more familiar with the playbook, I feel like I’m ready to contribute even more in the coming games.”

Despite Auburn’s disappointing record, Simmons remains optimistic. He believes the team’s struggles don’t reflect their true potential. “All season, we’ve been focused on finishing strong,” Simmons said. “No matter what the scoreboard says, as long as we play hard and for each other, that’s what counts.”

Lambert-Smith has played a crucial role in mentoring the younger players, including Malcolm Simmons. “He’s been a huge help for us young guys,” Simmons noted. “He’s taught us so much and has been a real leader in the wide receiver room.”

As Auburn prepares for a tough road matchup against No. 19 Missouri this weekend, Simmons will undoubtedly be a key part of the Tigers’ game plan. With kickoff set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN, fans will be eager to see if the Tigers can turn their season around and if Simmons can continue his impressive rookie campaign.
