Should the Detroit Lions take a chance on a discontented two-time Pro Bowler to fill the void left by star edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson, who leads the league with 7.5 sacks in just five games, underwent surgery after fracturing his left tibia and fibula during a dominant 47-9 victory against the Dallas Cowboys (3-3) in Week 6. The Lions placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Lions have contacted the New York Jets regarding edge-rusher Haason Reddick. Fowler noted that Detroit head coach Dan Campbell mentioned general manager Brad Holmes is “doing his homework,” which appears to be evident in this pursuit. The Philadelphia Eagles traded Reddick to the Jets in April, but he is currently in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract and is seeking a new deal.

On Tuesday, the Jets allowed Reddick’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to explore trade opportunities, as reported by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.

Although Reddick recorded 27 sacks over the past two seasons with the Eagles, the 30-year-old may struggle to perform at an elite level after missing the offseason and the first six weeks of this season.

Furthermore, if the Jets trade Reddick to an NFC team, the Eagles are set to receive a 2026 second-round pick, according to veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson. This means the Jets are likely to have a high asking price for Reddick in any potential trade.

While acquiring stars like Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders or Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns seems unlikely for the Lions, there are several solid veteran pass-rushers available before the November 5 trade deadline.

In his Monday column, The Athletic’s Mike Sando speculated that the struggling Browns (1-5) could consider trading edge-rusher Za’Darius Smith if their losses continue. According to Pro Football Focus, the three-time Pro Bowler has accumulated 10 pressures in his first six games.

The Lions (4-1) are keen to ensure Hutchinson’s injury doesn’t derail their Super Bowl aspirations. However, trading for Reddick might not enhance their chances, and they should explore better options before making a significant gamble.
