Cutdown time is one of the toughest moments for NFL teams, often requiring them to part with players they like due to limited roster space. The Detroit Lions faced this challenge when they released linebacker Abraham Beauplan after a strong camp and preseason performance.
Beauplan, who joined the Lions in early August after previously playing for the Vikings, made an impression in his short time with the team. His standout game against the Chiefs earned him a 90.1 grade from Pro Football Focus, and he followed it up with another solid showing against the Steelers in Week 3.
Despite his efforts, the Lions chose to stick with Ben Niemann, who had been with the team longer. Now, Beauplan has returned to the Lions, potentially filling in during Derrick Barnes’ absence for at least the next four games. Though the Lions have good depth at linebacker, Beauplan could see action through practice squad elevations in the coming weeks.
Even if he doesn’t play immediately, Beauplan is a young player with promise, and he could remain in the organization throughout the season, with the potential for a bigger role in 2025. At just 24 years old, he’s a project with a lot of upside.
To make room for Beauplan, the Lions will have to adjust their practice squad, either releasing someone or promoting a player to the 53-man roster. More updates are expected soon.
