Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler has been ruled out for this week’s game due to a concussion.

Ekeler sustained the injury and a lacerated ear during the second half of Monday night’s victory against Cincinnati, as reported by Commanders coach Dan Quinn. This marks Ekeler’s third recorded concussion in his over seven years in the NFL.

While his teammates traveled to Arizona following Monday night’s game, Ekeler returned to the team’s headquarters in Ashburn, Virginia. The Commanders (2-1) are set to face the Cardinals (1-2) on Sunday.

At 29 years old, Ekeler has recorded 13 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown in three games (one start) this season, which is his first with the Commanders. Additionally, he has made nine catches for 121 yards while sharing playing time with RB1 Brian Robinson.

Ekeler signed a two-year contract worth $11.43 million with Washington in March after spending seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Over the course of 106 career games (69 starts), Ekeler has accumulated 8,443 yards from scrimmage (4,438 rushing and 4,005 receiving), along with 40 rushing touchdowns and 30 receiving touchdowns.

The Commanders also have Jeremy McNichols available as a backup behind Robinson.
