Brisbane Broncos star fullback Reece Walsh has reportedly made a decision about his future, with plans to re-sign with the club. The Broncos have been in negotiations with Walsh, eager to secure a new contract before November 1, when rival clubs would be free to approach him, as his current deal expires at the end of 2025.
Walsh isn’t the only player nearing the end of his contract, with fellow outside backs Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo also set to become free agents after next season. Although both are expected to receive new offers, the Broncos have made it clear that locking down Walsh is the top priority, especially amid a tight salary cap, which has been strained by recent contract extensions for players like Ezra Mam, Payne Haas, and Patrick Carrigan.
According to News Corp, Walsh has agreed to a four-year extension, worth approximately $4.4 million, keeping him in Brisbane until at least the end of 2029. This deal positions Walsh as one of the highest-paid players in the league for the foreseeable future. While the contract hasn’t been formally signed, it’s expected to be finalized with an official announcement before November.
The extension places significant pressure on Walsh, especially after a challenging season where the Broncos went from 2023 grand finalists to missing the top eight in just a year. This pressure could intensify further if salary cap constraints force the club to part ways with either Cobbo or Staggs, both of whom have signaled they will explore other options if satisfactory offers aren’t presented soon.
