Supercars COO Tim Watsford is a leading contender for the soon-to-be-vacant CEO role at the St George Illawarra NRL club according to a major Sydney newspaper.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Dragons will not be renewing the contract of their current CEO, Ryan Webb, which is set to expire next April.

The search for a new CEO outside the organization is already in progress, following an unsuccessful inquiry about South Sydney’s Blake Solly. This development positions Watsford as a top candidate for the Dragons’ CEO position.

Watsford has a strong NRL background, having previously worked with the league early in his career. He later became the CEO of the Northern Territory Major Events Company, collaborating closely with Supercars management during the Darwin Triple Crown. In 2022, he joined Supercars as Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer and was promoted to COO by the end of the year.

He is recognized for his key role in securing the Perth street race deal for Supercars. This isn’t the first time he’s been linked to an NRL club; reports last year suggested he was in consideration for the CEO position at Wests Tigers while with Supercars.
