Cleveland Browns star wide receiver Amari Cooper’s start to the 2024 season has been unexpectedly underwhelming. If you had told me three weeks ago that he would have only five receptions for 27 yards, I would have guessed he had a modest first quarter or a sluggish first half of a game.

Yet, as we head into Week 3, those figures accurately reflect Cooper’s performance this season. The entire offense has struggled, though there have been some bright spots, making Cooper one of the biggest disappointments so far. With all eyes on him in Week 3, fans are eager to see him return to the elite form he’s shown over the past decade, especially in the matchup against the New York Giants.

Cooper has been plagued by drops, which is surprising given his reputation as a big-bodied receiver and elite route runner. Browns fans have come to expect reliability from him during his time in Cleveland. The recent signing of former Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy has added pressure, as Jeudy has exceeded expectations and could jeopardize Cooper’s status as the top receiver.

Cooper’s struggles have included not only contested catches but also dropping wide-open passes that could lead to big plays. The good news is he’s still showcasing his elite route-running skills, consistently getting open downfield. However, he needs to convert those opportunities when the ball comes his way.

I believe Cooper will turn things around in Week 3, particularly as the Giants’ defense may focus more on Jeudy. Cooper has not lacked for targets, receiving 17 in the first two weeks, the most among Browns receivers. Head coach Kevin Stefanski reassured fans that Cooper is doing fine and is expected to bounce back.

Several factors may have contributed to Cooper’s slow start, including the limited practice time with quarterback Deshaun Watson during contract negotiations. After securing a new contract this offseason that increased his salary by $5 million for 2024, I anticipate that Cooper will shake off any mental blocks and have a standout game in Week 3. Having two receivers capable of being number ones is a luxury, and if Cooper can regain his form, it will enhance Watson’s performance as well.

Regardless of Cooper’s output on Sunday, fans will inevitably speculate about his performance compared to Jeudy, both of whom received substantial contracts this offseason. That’s why he will be the key player to watch when the Browns face off against the Giants at home in Week 3.
