The New England Patriots recently faced a significant setback with star linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley suffering a season-ending injury. His absence has left a substantial gap in the defense, prompting speculation that the team may pursue a linebacker trade before the deadline.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano identified Indianapolis Colts linebacker E.J. Speed as a potential target for the Patriots. With Bentley on injured reserve due to a torn pectoral muscle, Speed could be a natural fit to step in as a starting linebacker. Speed has demonstrated his value with the Colts, and in the 2024 season, he has already registered 22 tackles across two games.
In 2023, Speed had a career-high season, recording 102 tackles, a sack, three forced fumbles, and four pass defenses. At 29, Speed not only offers immediate defensive reinforcement but could also be a long-term asset if the Patriots seek to extend his contract, as he is set to hit free agency after 2024.

While no trade has been made, and this remains speculative, Speed’s addition would certainly help the Patriots fill the void left by Bentley and bolster their defensive unit.
